There are two ways to make money from writing articles on the internet: By freelance writing and by use of article submission sites. This is a brief guide about what they both are, how to get started and how to make money from them.
Website owners know that producing regular content is the key to keeping traffic flowing to their sites. Often a website owner does not have time to keep producing articles for their site because of other responsibilites or simply because the site is too large to update by themselves. This fact has created opportunities for anyone with good writing skills to earn money writing articles for these sites. Payment for article writing can vary greatly depending on your experience, skill level, the topic you're writing about and the company or person that you are writing for. Articles usually do not need to be long (commonly between 300-500 words).
Often you will be able to find adverts looking for writers on webmaster forums. As it is webmasters who need the content, they will often go straight to their own forums and advertise under specific 'content creation' areas.
Failing that, there are plenty of freelance sites that act as a marketplace such as http://www.elance.com, where 'employers' can advertise for articles or content that they need written and where writers can 'bid' to win the job. It is not uncommon to see article writing jobs advertised in the format of "5 articles needed urgently on the subject of weight loss" and the employer will also supply information about their budget.
Build up a portfolio of articles that you have written. - It may be a good idea to write some well thought out articles for free so
that you can build up your portfolio before you start charging.
Learn to 'SEO write' - You will often see requests for 'SEO writers'. SEO stands for search engine optimisation and the advert basically means that they are looking for someone who knows
how to effectively use commonly searched 'keywords' in the article to make sure that it ranks well in the search engines. Therefore it is a good idea to learn a bit about how to make use of keywords
without ruining the article. For guidance on how to do this see here.
Don't charge too much at first - Article writing can be quite competitive. Don't charge too much to start as you won't get the jobs you want. Once
you have built up experience then you can start charging more.
Article submission sites make their money from advertising and share a small amount of the money they make with their users (the site content writers). Payment tends to be based on how often your article is viewed.
