An online forum is a place on the internet where people can get together to chat about a subject. For years I have used online forums to chat about sports, fitness and health, computers, television and general entertainment. When I think about it, I've used forums to talk about most of my hobbies and interests. One thing I had never considered was how these forums that I often visit became so popular and how much money they make.
As we know, to make money from an internet website you need traffic. The great thing about forums is that once they get started and a community forms, you are almost guaranteed to keep those visitors coming back for some time. Starting up a forum can be a slow process - not many people are interested in joining an online community, but as soon as they get started then other visitors will be drawn to them and so it can grow itself.
I recently heard that a guy I used to be in school with is making a lot of money from his online football (soccer) fan forums which he started only a couple of years ago. He started off by making a forum for his favourite football team and this quickly grew to the point where he realised he could make money from it. With soccer being the world's most popular sport, there was no shortage of fans to cause his sites to take off. When the first forum became a huge success he decided to do the same for many other teams in the English leagues. I understand that he makes over £300 profit per month from placing advertising on each forum alone. With around 30 sites that gives him a pretty good income!
Advertising - As ever, advertising is the primary way to make money. The forums generate the traffic and where there is traffic then advertisers will pay you for your space.
Private Areas – Many internet forums charge an extra fee to allow visitors access to private areas. People love to feel part of a VIP community so it works. In the case of forums with a technical topic, often a VIP area may contain members with expert knowledge so paying a small fee will be tempting for many members to be able to talk with experts.
'Platinum Memberships' (Paid Membership) – Similar to the above, a platinum membership may allow access to private areas or may just give extra functionality such as better searching or the ability to view images posted.
