Making Money with Pay Per Click Advertising
What are Pay Per Click schemes?
Pay Per Click (PPC) schemes are a form of website advertising whereby the website owner is paid a small amount whenever a visitor clicks on an advert
which is displayed on his/her website. Like most methods of advertising, earning a good income with this method relies upon having a regular
stream of traffic to your site. You also need your visitors to be interested enough in the adverts to click on them.
Targeting Adverts
The best way to get your visitors interested enough in the adverts to click on them is to target the adverts so that they match the
interests of your visitor. Your visitor will be interested in the topic of your page (otherwise they wouldn't be reading) so if you
can display adverts similar to your site content then some visitors will be interested enough to click. This targeting of adverts
is known as contextual advertising and can be done manually (i.e. you can select adverts yourself which you think are appropriate)
but most schemes now do this automatically for you.
Most notably, Google Adsense (the largest PPC scheme on the internet) will read the content of your page and display only targeted adverts.
Typical Payment Per Advert
The amount paid per click can vary greatly. Some types of advert will pay highly (e.g. $1 per click) and some will pay very low. Payment
rates can vary greatly depending on the topic of your site but a typical payment per advert might be between $0.10 and $0.20.
This doesn't sound like much, and it's not but the idea is that if you can get enough unique visitors to your site
then even the small proportion who click on your adverts will provide you with a good payment. For example, if you have 1000 unique visitors
to your site per day and 10% of those click on an advert which pays you $0.20 per click then you will make $20.00 per day or $600 per month
from just the one advert. If you have (i) more traffic, (ii) a greater 'click through rate' or (iii) more adverts, then you can earn a lot more.
Being accepted to PPC Schemes such as Adsense
The policy for acceptance to the Google Adsense scheme can be quite strict. Generally you should have a fairly professional looking site which
has a good stream of traffic before applying and content should be somewhat unique and must not breach any rules (e.g. site content must not
be pornographic). Despite this quite strict acceptance policy, it is possible for anyone to be accepted provided your site has the above qualities.
Make sure that you have your first few pages of content in place before you apply to Adsense and you will have a much better chance of being
accepted - my first application was rejected because I applied when I had only written my index page.
PPC Fraud
PPC Fraud is where the owner of the site displaying the adverts clicks on them in order to try to make more money. Don't do it because you WILL
be banned from the scheme. It is also advisable to make sure your friends know not to click on any of your adverts 'to help you out' because
this can also get you banned. Some say not to tell your friends about your site at all for this reason.
PPC On this site
I have used the Google Adsense network to display targeted adverts about making money on my website. These can be seen to the right, bottom and
left of most of my pages and will change depending on the topic of the article. You may find that to the right of this page there will be adverts
linking to the Google Adsense website simply because I have written about adsense in this article.
